Insurance and Costs

Do you accept my insurance?

Managed care companies were created to “manage” and contain escalating health care costs. Their bottom line is to reduce costs and raise profits; it is not to increase the quality of care professionals provide or your quality of life.

Managed care companies often choose to limit what services are offered, can restrict what is discussed in session, and may decide which clients can be seen and for how long.

Typically, only those services deemed medically necessary, which is defined as being literally about life and death and the treatment of illness, are covered. This means that they require a diagnosis of mental illness. This diagnosis remains on your record.

KMH is solution-focused on quality of life and personal goals.

Our work focuses on prevention, exploration, and personal growth rather than simply survival. Therefore, we have chosen to remain a concierge practice. This means that you pay out of pocket for our services and we provide you with the necessary paperwork (a “superbill”) to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement if you so choose to.

Be aware that should you choose to submit a superbill, you are releasing medical information that is protected by law. This means you are waiving some of your rights to privacy and confidentiality.

Policies and Confidentiality

Are these services confidential?

Your provider will always keep everything you say to him or her confidential, with the following exceptions:

  • You direct your provider to tell someone else and you sign a “HIPAA Authorization and Release of Information” form;
  • Your provider determines that you are a danger to yourself or to others;
  • You report information about the abuse of a child, an elderly person, or a disabled individual who may require protection; or
  • Your provider is ordered by a judge or by law to disclose information.

If such a situation arises, your provider will make every effort to fully discuss it with you before taking any action and will limit disclosure to what is necessary.

What if I don’t like my provider?

You’re not always going to like your provider. We don’t like everyone we meet in our lives and a provider is no different. When you are disclosing your innermost personal information, you want to feel comfortable with whom you’re sharing.

As difficult as it may seem, if you don’t like your provider you should tell him or her why. It’s helpful for providers to get feedback both during and after treatment, so they can evaluate their practice and adjust accordingly to your needs.

If, after discussing this concern with your current provider and not finding any acceptable resolution, it may be advisable to consider changing providers.

At KMH, we have a variety of providers that specialize in different areas. We are confident that we have someone on our team that will be a great fit for you. If not, we are committed to helping you find someone that will.

What is the client portal? What can it be used for?

The client portal is a simple and secure way for you and your provider to engage and share sensitive information online.

Since KMH is a paperless office, we use the client portal to:

  • Send and receive intake forms and consent forms;
  • Share documents and files;
  • Request demographic information;
  • Collect or update credit card information; and
  • Send statements, superbills, or invoices.

You may also use the portal to send secure messages to your provider, request appointments and make credit card payments.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or change your appointment, we ask you to inform your provider at least 24 hours in advance of your scheduled session start time. Your full session fee will be charged for missed appointments and cancellations received less than 24 hours in advance.

What should I do if I’m experiencing a mental health emergency?

KMH is considered an outpatient facility, and we are set up to accommodate individuals who are reasonably safe and resourceful. We do not carry beepers nor are we available at all times. Generally, providers will return phone calls within 24-48 hours. If you have a mental health emergency, we encourage you not to wait for a call back, but to do one or more of the following:

  • Call Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (National Crisis Line);
  • Contact Lifeline Chat at https://988lifeline.org/
  • Call 911; and/or
  • Go to the emergency room of your choice.

Scheduling and Appointments

Can I message my therapist between sessions, and how quickly will I hear back?

Quick Answer

Yes. Your clinician is happy to respond to non-urgent scheduling questions between sessions, such as canceling or rescheduling appointments. For clinical questions, treatment guidance, or therapeutic support, we ask that you schedule an appointment so we can give you the time and care you deserve. During office hours, our team responds to general outreaches within 24 business hours and providers generally return phone calls within 24–48 hours.
